Why Eye Tutorials Should Be Shape-First, Not Trend-First
Ever tried a viral eye look and wondered, “Why doesn’t it look like that on me?” Well, we've all been there, and that’s because most tutorials aren’t made for your eyes—they’re made for a crease that assumes every eye looks and folds the same way.
We’ve all seen the same smokey eye “how-to” recycled across beauty brands, influencers, and product launches. But here’s the problem- What works on almond eyes may look off on hooded or monolid ones. That’s where the eye shape makeup guide comes in
A 2024 study from Allure Beauty Insights revealed that 73% of Gen-Z consumers stop watching a tutorial if it doesn’t match their face or eye shape within the first 10 seconds. That's a huge number!
Generic eye tutorials have one major flaw: they treat the eye like a one-size-fits-all canvas. If your crease is low, or your lid is hooded, or you have a deep-set gaze - guess what? The cut crease or trending halo eye probably isn’t going to land the way you hoped.
“Tutorials should reflect your structure, not a makeup artist’s idealised one. It’s 2025. Let’s get personal.” — Aditi Rao, pro MUA and educator.
We get it. Trends are fun. Graphic liner? We love it. Soft girl shimmer? Also love that. But execution changes dramatically based on eye shape. Here’s why shape-first is the new standard:
Ignoring this is like applying contour made for a square jaw on a heart-shaped face. You can, but will it look as good?
Creators are catching on, and so are consumers. On TikTok, the hashtag #eyeshapetutorial has over 320 million views, with creators building loyal followings for shape-specific breakdowns.
YouTube’s algorithm, too, is rewarding niche beauty content. Tutorials labelled “for hooded eyes,” “monolid cut crease,” or “almond eye glam” get 3.4 times more engagement than generic ones (source: Tubular Labs, 2024).
Beauty Creators like @bbyblends also agree and say “I stopped watching ‘everyday glam’ tutorials and searched ‘round eyes soft glam’ instead. Game-changer.”
What if tutorials changed based on your eye shape? That’s what Admigos is doing. Think animated demos that switch between monolid, hooded, and almond eyes—using the same product, but showing the right technique. Don't forget to check them out too!
If you're a beauty brand still marketing one eyeshadow look across all eye shapes, you're missing out.
Shape-led beauty marketing doesn’t just feel more inclusive. It sells better. Brands that invest in eye-type-specific visuals saw:
Here’s a shape-based product guide to help you get started:
Shape-first tutorials don’t just make your makeup look better. They make the beauty space feel like it finally gets you. So don't get frustrated the next time your eye look doesn't turn out like the tutorial, just find another one that fits your eye shape! And if you’re a brand? Show up with visuals that speak to every eye, not just one!
